Below are my artistic samples for my application for the 2020 National Park Service Artist in Residence position.
“The Aftermath” is a collaboration with Arrowmont School Artist in Residence Alyssa Coffin. I created music from electronically processed field recordings of natural sound (flies, birds, water, etc) on the Andrews Bald trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Alyssa then created a movement/dance drawing to accompany my music.
“Rocky Top” is a video I created as an Artist-in-Residence at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The beat of the music was created from natural sounds I recorded in the park (birds, waterfalls, flies, thunder).
“Chickapocalyptic” is a piece written in celebration of 2018 being designated as the Year of the Bird. It features live electronic processing of a recording of a chickadee using Max/MSP, as well as a live performance on trumpet. The piece is an impending warning of our shifting planet, each call from the chickadee signaling a closer step towards destruction.
“Route 66” was funded in part by a fellowship through Fund for Teachers, a wonderful organization that allows teachers to create their own professional development experiences. The video I created below is a celebration of the landscape along the old American highway Route 66.
Below are six additional samples of my work. They are all one minute in length.
"Yosemite" is an interactive computer music program created using Max/MSP. It creates a generative sound collage from my personal field recordings in several national parks, including Yosemite, King's Canyon, and the Grand Canyon.
"The Sun Always Sets on the Dead" is my tribute to the sounds, spaces, and landscapes of the American southwest.
"Aurora Borealis" is a depiction of the aurora borealis, the Perseid meteor shower, and other celestial events in Trout Lake, Michigan.
"Lake Michigan" is a movement from the "Great Lakes Suite," a five-movement work for young wind ensemble that pays tribute to the history, culture, and landscape of the five Great Lakes.
"Transit 1 2 3" depicts the invisible musical tapestry found in cities through an interwoven soundscape of live trumpet and chimes from public transit systems.
"Twilight of the Day" is a piece for piano that depicts a sunset over Lake Charlevoix in Petoskey, Michigan.
Here are some pictures of me creating/recording music in some of our nation's parks.
