B/lurt (2014)
Inspired by Dave Eggers' novel The Circle, this experimental piece embodies concerns about technology, social media, information, security, and privacy. It uses several innovative elements including a manipulative percussion section (who control the ensemble like buttons on a keyboard), computer symbols for rehearsal markings, aleatoric sections, and a seven note tone row structure.
Written for 2nd Year Concert Band (Grade 1 - 1.5)
Premiered by the Howell Highlander Way Middle School 7th Grade Band (Andy Jarema, cond)
Errata: The recording features two cuts made in the score (one occurs from "=" to "÷", and the other occurs after "()" ). Also, the score does not show the rule-breaking key signature (in concert pitch, there is an Eb but no Bb).
Fanfare for an Age of Anxiety (2018)
This is a slightly reworked version of the beginning of B/lurt. This allows young players to explore aleatoric techniques in a short, simple piece.
